Technical Communications

Proofreading

The last thing you want if you are presenting a professional business paper, document, resume, article or web page, is to have errors in grammar or spelling. Nothing loses credibility quite so fast as "your" when it should be "you're" or transposed or duplicated words. Put extra eyes on your valuable correspondence by letting Mark Scott Consulting proofread your documents prior to submission. We can perform this in a timely fashion so that you can meet your critical deadlines.

Journalism

Having been a music writer since childhood, at both St. Petersburg (Junior) College and as a Technical Communications (Journalism) major at the University of Florida I was on the staff of the school newspapers, which included subject interviews, determining content, writing copy, editing and proofreading. These are skills I have honed and used constantly since then.

It is somewhat incidental to writing, but notable on a larger scale that in my high school senior year I was ineligible to take electronics, so I opted for typing. This discipline set the stage for ease of use on computers as well as gaining transcriber and other data processing work. I was able to supplement my income at college by typing up fellow student's papers. Tested at 74 wpm around ten years ago, my capabilities have not diminished.

Documentation

As a young man at Nielsen I pulled myself up out of my initial position as stock clerk to the ultimate position of progammer/analyst by first becoming an administrative assistant/staff systems aide. I was, among other things, in charge of interpreting complex Engineering meetings and sessions, capsulizing and publishing them as part of departmental weekly status. I was also placed in charge of the documentation library which required this same comprehension, attention to detail, organization, grammar and spelling.

Desktop Publishing

After a company-wide layoff at Nielsen (above), I ran a home-based business as a Desktop Publisher. Securing the latest Mac and a top-notch laser printer I procured new business and negotiated with customers. I was called upon to write copy for customers with a message but wo lacked the necessary skills to convey it effectively. I worked with property management firms, small businesses, realtors, etc. I created professional-looking resumes for individuals, which naturally required precise grammar, wording and attention to detail. Responsibilities also included:

  • Page design
  • Paste up and layout
  • Editing, proofreading
  • Trascription
  • Phamplets/Flyers and Newsletters
  • Quality Assurance
  • Hercules/Alliant Techsystems

In my position as "Training Specialist" (a job title that certainly did not describe the extent of my responsibilities) among other things I was called upon to create training material for our rule scripting course which required not only a full understanding of its capabilities but the knowledge to portray it to a layperson in terms that they could understand.

    Documentation Specialist

For the past ten years as Support Manager for the DocMaestro (ISPA, Inc.) suite of products, responsibilites included authoring most User and Training documentation associated with this software, which included an integrated internationally used Adobe Acrobat plugin (InfoLinker), a web-based document repository and workflow email-driven Agenda system being used in several large municipalities.
